Kudos to Lulu, who quickly pegged the Art Deco archways in this week's Cornerspotter as belonging to the old Western Union building at 60 Hudson Street. Some thought it was BellTel Lofts or Walker Tower, and the latter is completely understandable since they were, in fact, designed by the same dude (Ralph Walker) and opened just a year apart. Unlike those two lookalikes, which got converted to condos, 60 Hudson is still used as offices. But even though Western Union decamped in the 1970s, it still houses telecom and internet businesses?the communications industry is just a different ballgame since the telegraph passed on, that's all.
