Chelsea's Bayview Correctional City on West 20th Street will be sold off by the state, and thus a battle is brewing between preservationists, who would like to save the 1931 structure, once lodging for seafaring merchants, and developers, who see other uses for the lot. Architakes has a look at the building's architectural features, which include terra cotta detailing, ships' prows and waves, and the entrance designed by Empire State Building architects Shreve, Lamb & Harmon. Just try to imagine the structure without the added security features of its time as a prison. [Architakes; previously]
