Vanity Fair delves into a nugget of intriguing history at UWS celeb magnet The Majestic, erstwhile home to Conan O'Brien, George Soros's ex, and Bill Ackman (sort of). In the late 50s, it was also where notorious mobster Frank Costello shacked up for awhile, and while waiting for the elevator in the Art Deco lobby he was shot by a thuggish henchman of rival Vito Genovese. Though the bullet only grazed his head, he ceded power of the underworld to Genovese and decamped to a Waldorf penthouse to live out his days in peace. [VF; previously; photo via Wikimedia]
