Today, The Post featured an article by a woman who visited the Sun Bright Hotel, a Chinatown flophouse that offers residents 5x7 foot "cages" of chicken wire for $10 a night. Needless to say, the conditions (overcrowded floors, vermin infestations, residents routinely being attacked, among other indignities) are horrific and even acknowledging The Post's penchant for sensationalism, the article still reads like something written by Jacob Riis a hundred-odd years ago. According to The Post, the Department of Buildings has "slapped the Sun Bright with 46 summonses since 1988 . . . it has 22 open violations, nearly all issued in 2011." [NYP]
