Cornerspotter connoisseur Ferryboi recognized this week's historic photo almost immediately, despite our best efforts to blur any and all identifying details. The old image shows Fleischmann's Vienna Model Bakery, which opened at Broadway and East 10th Street around 1880. The bakery and cafe became a neighborhood meeting place, but owner Louis Fleischmann is most remembered for his charity?he's credited with creating the "bread line." At the end of every day, Fleischmann would distribute his unsold goods to the hungry, who lined up around the block. Fleischmann died in 1904, and the bakery relocated to 11th Street. Grace Church bought the building not long after and demolished it to expand the church property.
