According to Toll Brothers' David Von Spreckelsen, Bill De Blasio was "the key person to the project's success" in the developer's quest to build along the Gowanus Canal back in 2009. The New Yorker examines De Blasio's role in that project, which involved asking for affordable housing and organized labor; he got the housing but not the labor, and Toll Brothers moved on from the site, anyway. But De Blasio benefited from his involvement in other ways, including with a Von Spreckelsen-hosted fundraiser in March. [New Yorker; previously]
