Two Manhattan power plants are almost finished converting their systems from oil to natural gas, a makeover that will slash fossil fuel emissions by more than 40 percent and is apparently "equivalent to taking about 26,000 cars off the streets." Con Edison's $100 million greening project has taken six months, as workers replaced every single pipe and part of the furnaces (located in rooms that were, like, 110 degrees) with pieces that can handle the natural gas.
