NYU photography professor Mark Bussell, who moved to Little Italy in 1974, saw the area change over the decades as old-timers were priced out, assimilated, or moved away. The neighborhood-y vibes dwindled along with the mom-and-pops. So he started a class to gather historical images and collect stories from long-time residents, and what resulted is an attempt to capture a faded?but always colorful?slice of the city, sans mafia or Sopranos stereotypes.
