The history of Minetta Brook?whose dregs still trickle today, carving little canals in the basements of buildings?is a rich one. Imagine parts of the Flatiron and the West Village (hence the Minetta-inspired street names) full of trout and surrounded by farm plots and colonial estates. Since it was submerged, though, modern-day workers have had to avoid unearthing or rerouting it when they dig in the area; NYU's law school library has to constantly pump groundwater from its basement.
