Fixing Our 'Asphalt Steppes'

New, 8 comments

"Why do we build these asphalt steppes, then keep making them grimmer still?" architect Justin Davidson wonders in a piece about the design of the suburbs in this week's New York Magazine. Most major architects have no interest in suburban revitalization projects, he notes, but along Long Island's Route 110, for example, there are opportunities for better bus lanes and light rail, sidewalks, and bigger apartment buildings, among other changes. Two new books, including one by SHoP's Vishaan Chakrabarti, offer calls to action for our grim suburbs but few concrete solutions. [NYM]
