Neighbor Beefs

Surprise, surprise?Soho residents are very upset about the big glass rectangle that's replacing the highly trafficked plot of land on East Houston and Broadway that's currently home to a fruit stand and an MTA parking lot. Specifically, they don't like the modernity of the design, courtesy of Perkins Eastman, for the six-story building with retail at the bottom and offices up top. Quotable quotes from neighbors? It'll be "an appalling billboard," "a Christmas tree," and "a corridor of glass" that screams "Welcome to Midtown." They're taking their pleas to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which oversees the historic district, on September 10. [DNAinfo; previously]
