Rooftop water towers are a beloved part of New York's skyline, and a vital onemillions of people get their drinking water from these tanks every daybut an investigation by the Times shows that's probably not the best. Evidently, the tanks are rarely inspected and are often filled with "muddy sediment" and contain E. coli, likely from intrusion by birds and squirrels. So water towers and the Gowanus Canal have similar gross characteristics. Lovely. [NYT; photo by Josh Pater/Curbed Flickr pool]
