Neighborhood Beefs

Coney Islanders are still mourning the loss of the 74,440-square-foot Boardwalk Community Garden, which was razed in the middle of the night in late December. Many needy families in the neighborhood grew a significant amount of their food in the garden, but developer iStar Financial bulldozed it to make way for a 5,000-seat amphitheater that's part of the Childs Restaurant redevelopment. To replace the lost green space, the city gave the gardeners a plot less than half the size, 30,000-square-feet, at a shared garden half a mile away. [WSJ; previously; photo via NYCCGC Facebook]
