A 44th-floor apartment in The Excelsior on 57th Street is having no luck finding a buyer, despite that fact that it was once the home of Billy Joel. Joel lived in the 2BR/2.5BA during the '80s with then-wife Christie Brinkley, eventually movin' out to upgrade to a penthouse on Central Park South (which also changed hands last year for just over $11 million). Joel currently resides in a $3.3 million pad Nolita's 211 Elizabeth Street.
As for the Excelsior apartment, it has had only one owner since Joel, former New Jersey Nets partner Alan Aufzein, who put the co-op on the market back in October for $1.5 million and, a month later, allowed the price to the chopped down to $1.45 million. Part of the lack of interest might stem from the interior design, which, it's plausible to think, may not have been updated since Joel left, and seems to have taken on a sort of sickly pallor over the years. Another problem could be the $4,634 (???) maintenance costs.
