Thanks to new mayor Bill de Blasio, Jerry Delakas won the first round of his eviction case. The city is trying to boot Delakas from his 26-year-long post at an Astor Place newsstand, but he is fighting back with a lawyer and backed by a galvanized army of supporters. The city's law department officially Delakas a two-week reprieve from the case, which was due to be settled this week, and that gives de Blasio time to step in with actual help as well as prevent new operators from setting up shop at the stall.
