The proposed transfer of Hart Island, a small swath of land in Long Island Sound formerly used as a potters field, from the Department of Corrections to the Parks Department is gaining steam amongst local civic groups. The transfer could not only open the swath of land up to loved ones wishing to visit the deceased but also see the creation of a 130-acre public park. The City Island Civic Association has logged a request to visit the site and "assess [their] position on the issue." [BX Times; previously]
