Historic Theater Will Get Resided & Divided Into 38 Apartments

New, 6 comments

One year ago it was unveiled that the formerly ornamented Alhambra Theatre at the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Halsey Street would be trading its 2,200 seats—the space more recently served as a school and grocery store—for apartments. Since then, though, word of progress at the site has been null. WyckoffHeights.org now reports, along with a first rendering, that work permits were issued for the site in the summer. The project architect is Charles Mallea, who'll modernize the building's striped facade, but—thankfully—retain its signature turret. Early reports of the conversion said the building would hold 24 units, but filings say that the building's 25,179-square-feet of residential space will be divided between 38 apartments. The conversion should be complete in the spring.
