The New York City subway system officially turns 110 years old today. The first trains started running on October 27, 1904. More than 100,000 people jostled and elbowed each other—what else is new?—to take a ride on the brand-spankin'-new rails on that landmark night, along the nine miles of track laid down by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) Company. Clearly, the occasion merited a top hat. [CityLab; previously]
