After two crane collapses in 2008 in which nine people were killed, the Department of Buildings hired private consultants, who made 65 recommendations. The DOB said that it would be able to implement 49 of those changes within two years, but an audit conducted by city Comptroller Scott Stringer has revealed that so far, only eight of the suggestions have been met. Another 17 have been partially implemented, and 18 are currently in progress. [Crain's; previously]
