Food cart vendors have been engaged in a serious turf war outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2007, when one vendor decided to take advantage of a 19th law that allows disabled veterans to vend on parks' property without paying a permit fee. Others soon followed suit, but some eventually sold their disabled vet permits to non-veteran cart operators, and others had to start sleeping in their carts to hold onto their prime spots. The whole mess won't be sorted out until the New York State Supreme Court weighs in with its interpretation of the law. [NYO; previously]
