ASTOR PLACE—Fine goods online marketplace 1stdibs has taken up residence in downtown's Fumihiko Maki-designed Death Star at 51 Astor Place, and of course the purveyors of really expensive antique and designer goods had to make their showroom reflect their work. The 42,000-square-foot office space is decorated with things like midcentury tables designed by TWA Flight Center architect Eero Saarinen, bookcases by George Nelson, and photographs by Lillian Bassman. FINANCIAL DISTRICT—To celebrate the opening of One World Trade Center, building architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are hosting a contest in which amateur and professional photographers are welcome to submit their photographs of the tower through Instagram or email. At stake, a one-off scale model of the tower handcrafted by the firm's model shop as well as a limited edition print of 1 WTC by photographer James Ewing. The contest began on November 3 and will remain open until December 3. Jurors will be comprised of SOM architects and James Ewing. The winner will be announced on December 10.
