At Goldwater Memorial Hospital on Roosevelt Island, it was a race to beat the clock before demolition began on the building to make way for the future Cornell Tech campus; the race was to find two known, but missing, 1940's Works Progress Administration murals hidden under layers and decades of paint. According to those working the site, finding the murals was a work of "forensic archaeology." Hint: they've been recovered, but that makes their story no less fascinating. [NYT; previously]
