Let's just get this out of the way: Herzog & de Meuron's 56 Leonard is the best building on the rise in New York. In describing the tower as a reason to love this city, archicritic Justin Davidson calls it a "surreal totem pole," that is "the most alluring addition to the downtown skyline in decades." The building's principal designer said they "wanted to destroy the anonymous extrusion of a glass tower and instead introduce houses in the sky." Oh and that giant silver pillow by Anish Kapoor? It's definitely happening. [NYM; previously]
