Trinity Church Files Plans to Demolish FiDi Buildings

New, 16 comments

Mega-landlord Trinity Church is going ahead with its plan to build a 44-story tower at 68 and 74 Trinity Place, having just recently filed a demolition permit application with the city's Department of Buildings.

Trinity Church plans to raze two properties: one six-story building at 68 Trinity Place and one 25-story building at 74 Trinity Place. Much of the criticism directed towards Jason Pizer (the president of Trinity's real estate arm) and the Rev. Dr. James Cooper has centered around the structure at number 74, which is 90-years-old. Likewise, the large, glassy design proposal by Pelli Clarke Pelli was blasted when it was unveiled last year, with Community Board 1 member Joel Kopel arguing that, "tourists come here from all over the world and the last thing we need is another building that looks like it's on East 59th Street."

Trinity's application is pending, but earlier permits were rejected a few months ago, after the submitted plans did not meet city-mandated setback requirements.
