DNAinfo has a piece about the concessions that renters make to be able to afford Manhattan, but mainly it's about one guy who doesn't have a toilet in his apartment and has to use the one in his building's hallway. It's worth a read if only for the tidbit about how "roughly once a year" he drinks too much and "while I get down on my knees puking in the stall, I just whisper to the toilet, 'Thank you for making living in the city possible.'"
