Christopher Gray decided to use the near-loss of the American Folk Art Museum's facade as a chance to remember other beloved architectural beauties that the city has lost. Among them: the Brokaw Mansions on East 79th Street (pictured); the Beaux-Arts-style Astor Hotel; "the moody, slightly malevolent Ziegfeld Theater"; and the Financial District's Singer Building. Get out the violinswhether you're a preservationist or not, these losses are sad. [NYT; photo via Daytonian in Manhattan]
