East Village Funeral Home Turned Rental Building Revealed

New, 38 comments

The scaffolding and construction netting has been removed from the former funeral home at 152 Second Avenue to reveal a six-story brick, glass, and wrought iron structure that pays its respects to the neighborhood aesthetic. EV Grieve spotted the freshly revealed building. Formerly the three-story Sigmund Schwartz Gramercy Park Chapel, the newly six-story structure designed by Issac & Stern between East 9th and East 10th streets will house rental units and ground floor retail, which is still vying for an anchor store (PDF!).

The building's plan exam was filed in April of 2011 and has been in the works since, with only minuscule snafus along the way like a small site fire which was "little more than a spark from an open gas line," according to workers who put out the tiny blaze. The commercial and residential space will be marketed exclusively by Icon Realty, who have yet to disclose pricing for the 25 units.
