The city is finally acting on a long-stalled East Harlem site that is primed for redevelopment and the construction of a $700 million project with affordable housing, retail, and cultural space. The East Harlem Media, Entertainment and Cultural Center, set to rise between 125th and 127th streets from Second to Third avenues, was (and is) heartily opposed by local business owners and others who argue that they are being squeezed out and that such a megaproject is out of context with the area. The city got the green light to use eminent domain to force stragglers out and take over the land in 2008, but the site is still dormant. Will 2014 be the year some progress is made?
