Comedian Jeff Lawrence share his tale of apartment-hunting on the Lower East Side, when he nabbed a rent-stabilized gem on Broome Street in 2004 and since then fought off his landlord's attempts to illegally raise the rent. He describes his efforts lodging a complaint with the Division of Housing and Community Renewal and winning out in the end, all while maintaining a tongue-in-cheek perspective: "After, all the definition of gentrification is when you move into a neighborhood and your friends are like 'why are you living there?' and 10 years later the same friends say 'OMG, how did you get it!'"
