A coalition of opponents will file a lawsuit today in an effort to stop the Willets Point megaproject: a $3 billion retail, residential, and entertainment complex set to rise next to Citi Field. The plaintiffs are State Senator Tony Avella, the City Club, nonprofit NYC Park Advocates, and a number of Corona businesses and residents (who haven't been happy about the development for a long time). Their argument is that a shopping mall will be erected in a parking lot that is technically parkland. The City Council green-lit the development back in October knowing full well the beef about lost parkland at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, but perhaps the courts will rule differently.
