Crazy Salt Shed to Rise Soon in Tribeca

New, 34 comments

Years in the making, the Canal Street Garbage Garage—Tribeca's much maligned new building/garbage truck garage—is almost completed. Now, the similarly controversial Spring Street Salt Shed is now set to rise just south of the garage. According to Tribeca Citizen, a one-story building on West Street between Canal and Spring has been demolished, with the shed set to reach completion in 2014.

Renderings provided by designer Dattner Architects indicate that the salt shed will resemble a gigantic salt crystal, with large, flat planes enclosing reinforced concrete. The 6,300-square-foot building will hold 4,000 tons of salt and feature "a glazed moat that will be illuminated at night" (but, apparently, no doors).
