Beach Wire

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy washed away, quite literally, Rockaway Beach, and now, finally, the beach is finally getting its sand back. Over the next several months, 2.9 million cubic feet of sand—more than two Empire State Buildings full—will be dredged from just offshore and siphoned onto the beach between Beach 19th and Beach 149th Streets to raise the sand 10 to 14 feet above sea level. The work will occur at the same time as the ongoing boardwalk re-building, a $274 million project that will end in 2017. [NYT; previously]
