Members of the Lower East Side's Bialystoker Synagogue are feuding over the sale of the Orenstein senior apartment building, which was co-owned by the synagogue and the United Jewish Council of the East Side. Some members are claiming that when the $28 million sale occurred they were misled to believe that the money would go towards synagogue maintenance, when in fact it is restricted and can only be used for affordable housing. The synagogue and UJC also have plans to sell another parcel across the street, intensifying the infighting. [The Lo-Down]
