Some Guy Is Creating a Scale Model of Manhattan in Minecraft

New, 7 comments

This is actually pretty cool. NYU Computer Science PhD candidate Christopher Mitchell is using the video game Minecraft to create a 1:1 scale replica of Manhattan, including perfect replicas of individual buildings such as the midtown branch of the New York Public Library (above). Mitchell hopes to create a more accurate virtual portrayal of New York City than any of the ones that have appeared in previous video games like Grand Theft Auto IV. "While generating a building or a single structure is tough but doable," writes Ars Technica, "the challenges of replicating an entire city composed of those building models are gargantuan." So, good luck to this guy—if it all works out for him and the weather doesn't improve soon, maybe we should see about trying to live inside of this virtual New York.
