This Big Box Is Replacing Crown Heights' Fox Savoy Theater

The development of big, bland boxes is booming in Crown Heights, and the latest addition to the bunch has been revealed. Brownstoner spotted renderings for 1515 Bedford Avenue, a 144-unit project being developed by Realty Within Reach, on the website of architecture firm Isaac and Stern. The grey box is replacing a neo-classical building that was originally built in the 1920s as the Fox Savoy Theater. Building permits were approved for a 10-story structure, and that's how the architect's describe the project, but the renderings seem to show only a 7-story building.

Demolition work began in December, and the site was hit with a full stop work order in February for failing to properly brace the building. The SWO was partially rescinded to fix the problem, but a partial SWO still exists.

The building will have 30 underground parking spaces, plus a laundry facility and roof deck, and as evidenced in the renderings, there will be several units with private outdoor space. The ground floor will have a synagogue and retail space. The site is located at the corner of Lincoln Place, across the street from a gas station and just one block north of Eastern Parkway.
