Composer Judd Greenstein and director Joshua Frankel are writing an opera based on the legendary 1960s urban design battle between urban planner Robert Moses, who wanted to turn Lower Manhattan into a have for cars, and journalist/activist Jane Jacobs, who favored making the streets safer for pedestrians. The project is still in the planning stages, but Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Tracy K. Smith has already signed on to write a libretto. [Fast Co. Design]
