Fireplaces, especially restored, historic wood-burning fireplaces, are an amenity that can increase the value of a property by 5 percent, but Mayor de Blasio wants to put an end to their existence to help cut air pollution. Yesterday he proposed new regulations that would ban dirty wood-burning fireplaces, allowing only cleaner-burning units like those that run on natural gas. Sooty fireplaces have been "acquiring a social stigma" for years now, so it was only a matter of time before they were kicked to the curb. [NYP; previously]
