Landmarked Synagogue to Develop Neighboring Condos

A new nine-story structure is coming to a long-stalled site at 8 West 70th Street. The rather contemporary building is being developed by the neighboring Congregation Shearith Israel and is designed by Platt Byard Dovell White, YIMBY reports. The new structure will serve as an addition to the landmarked temple and includes several floors of community and synagogue space, and four full-floor condos on the fifth through ninth stories, with a duplex condo stretching over the two uppermost stories. The building will occupy 41,565 square feet, 21,551 of which will be devoted to its residential component.

The project's been met with opposition from Upper West Siders who believe the nine-story "tower" will obscure views at a neighboring structure. The existing structure is four-stories high, and at-height with the neighboring synagogue.
