Preservation Battles

New, 2 comments

Yesterday, preservationists, neighbors, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer organized a protest outside Rizzoli Bookstore, which is set to close on April 11th. Speakers included Brewer and Simeon Bankoff, Executive Director of the Historic Districts Council, who admitted that it was probably too late to save the historic building, despite rumors of last-minute lawsuits and attempts to landmark the building's interior. Longtime neighbor Isabel Madden said, "As long as it is here, doing nothing is not an option . . . This neighborhood has been taken over by Vornado and Extell, it's a disgrace. Everybody has been bought off." [Gothamist; previously]
