West 57th Street's BIG Pyramid of Apartments Takes Shape

New, 1 comment

When it comes to construction-watching on 57th Street, most eyes are on the supertall towers rising just south of Central Park, but the western-most part of the street is also worthy of attention. BIG's sloping magical mountain is currently rising at 625 West 57th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues. Over the weekend, Field Condition snapped some photos of the in-progress building, which currently sits at the fourth floor. The pyramid shape is not quite obvious yet, but the angular balconies are visible along the 58th Street side. When complete in 2015, the 709-unit rental building will peak at 450 feet.

The Durst Organization has owned the site for awhile, and plans for a Bjarke Ingels Group-designed building began percolating back in 2010. The pyramid plans won City Council approval in early 2013, after the developer agreed to include affordable housing in the project.
