Plantworks on East 4th Street, one of the city's most beloved garden shops, will reportedly close its door by the end of June, after more than 40 years. It will be vacating the space because it can no longer afford the rent, which has apparently been jacked up from $15,000 to $34,000 per month. The closing of Plantworks has been a possibility since 2012, when a "For Lease" sign first appeared at the site. Given what's rising in the surrounding area, we would not be surprised to see condos on the site. [VNY]
