Guy Wants to Bring Luxury Campground to Rockaway Beach

New, 15 comments

Make of this what you will, but the owner of design and building consulting firm Milktrout is trying to build a luxurious campsite on the beachfront in Arverne, a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula. Designer Kent Johnson's idea for the site, to be known as Camp Rockaway, came from the tent colonies that sprang up in the area in the early 20th century for New Yorkers who couldn't afford to rent a summer home. But unlike those rinky dink little 1900s tents, Johnson's tents will be set on raised platforms and will come with real beds, fresh linens, coffee, and other such things that make it seem like you're not actually sleeping in a tent in Queens. He's hoping to raise $50,000 through Kickstarter. Call us crazy, but this actually sounds kind of cool.

Now, nobody mention anything about hurricanes...
