Hint: No Garden at This Stout Structure, as its Name Implied

Welcome to Cornerspotter, Curbed's game in which you try to identify the location and/or identity of a particular building or streetscape in a historic photograph. Impress us and your fellow Curbed readers with your uncanny insight into New York City and its past!

This unusual building looked—and probably smelled, too—more like something out of Hansel and Gretel than a structure found in the five boroughs. Captured here in 1933, the site has since undergone several iterations, but still remains. Where does this stout structure stand and what purpose did it serve at the time pictured?
