In an effort to address the inequity in the funding of New York City's public parks, Mayor Bill de Blasio's preliminary budget includes $80 million set aside for "neighborhood parks," as opposed to, say, the Central Park Conservancy, which in 2012 received a $100 million donation from a hedge fund manager. The move speaks to the larger issue of what happens when funding for parks comes primarily from conservancies and donations and not from the city itself — basically, parks in wealthy areas get really nice and the ones in poorer areas are left to rot.
