In parts of Brooklyn and Queens, the city has launched a pilot program encouraging residents to compost, and people (sort of) seem to be liking it! The program has expanded to include about 70,000 households, and one out of three are reportedly participating, despite grumbling holdouts complaining about the smell. That number may increase if the city enacts composting legislation (as it did with recycling in 1986), but such a move would take years. [NYT]
