Window washers to the rich and famous richer R&R Scaffolding explains how the company cleans the more than 2,000 windows of 8 Spruce Street, Frank Gehry's curvaceous Financial District tower. It requires a special rig with six sub-sections, or baskets, that can move individually, allowing workers to get close enough to the undulating facade to wipe it down. Cost: $1.5 to $3 million to install the system, plus one round of cleaning, which takes six months and is performed once a year. Guess that's the price of optimally transparent windows for view enjoyment in a building with $12,500/month rentals. [NYM; previously]
