The signage atop 30 Rockefeller Plaza isn't the only thing that's changing on the iconic building. The Times and Variety have details about some major changes that NBCUniversal is planning for the interior, the biggest of which involves recreating the Art Deco lobby with a mezzanine rotunda and 16-foot grand staircase. According to the Times, the change, which a NBC rep said is meant to "elevate" the experience for visitors, will requiring breaking through a floor plate. No price tag was given, but the cost is likely in the tens of millions. Gabellini Sheppard Associates designed the renovation, and Michael Gabellini told the Times that the new rotunda is not meant to be a replica when it opens in the spring of 2015.
The original space was surrounded with radio-themed photography by Margaret Bourke-White, but the new space will have two 60-foot-long LED screens projecting images related to the shows filmed inside the building. According to Variety, the screens will be embedded into the walls, which will be made of "embellished bronze 'silk glass.'" A "custom bronze ringed chandelier" that nods to the original will hang in the center of the room.
Other changes, according to Variety, include a new waiting area for audiences coming to view show tapings. To be called the Peacock Lounge, it will be outfitted with 13-foot columns covered with LCD screens, plus smaller screens will be arranged around the room. All of them will show content from the show they are about to watch. Guests arriving for the "Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" or "The Meredith Vieira Show" will have a separate space on the 7th floor. This lobby will have "green tinted marble panels and wall coverings made of specially milled African Sapele Pommele wood and brass." Fancy!
Additionally, three new production rooms will be created, the NBC store will move closer to Sixth Avenue, and the "Greeters Stand," which is exactly what it sounds like, will be reinstated in the main lobby.
