The Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (SPURA) is almost officially en route to becoming Essex Crossing: city officials have ordered several businesses and residents to vacate parts of the two million-square-foot site by Monday in preparation for demolition of existing buildings. Phase 1 will see both market rate and affordable housing, a branch of the Andy Warhol museum, and a new grocery store rise on the site that has, according to Nathan Kensinger, blighted the Lower East Side for over 45 years.
