As part of Outdoors Week 2014, we're searching for New York City's best dog park. Nominate your dog park or run by writing us a short description of what makes it great and telling us why your dog loves it; send photos to tips@curbed.com and your adorable pup may be featured on the site. We'll be sharing two parks (and lots of photos!) per day, and voting begins Friday.
The second nomination in this one-week quest to find the city's best dog park goes to the dog run in Tompkins Square Park, which holds the title of the city's first official dog run. One dog-owner even told us it's one of her "favorite places in New York City. There's a huge tree sprouting out of the deck of the small run that provides a lot of shade, and the big run is HUGE—lots of room to play." Another added that the community is great"either cool younger people or nice older people. Not too many judge-y doggie parents." There are several of easily accessible entrances, three swimming pools for dogs to wade in and cool off, and benches along the fences of both the large and small dog runs. The group Friends of First Run takes great pride in maintaining the space, and in 2008, they secured $450,000 in funding for a renovation.
