An excellent long-form piece by Tessa Stuart on the Village Voice blog delves into an aspect of 5 Pointz that has gotten little attention thus far: the hundreds of artists that Jerry Wolkoff acted as something of a benefactor for by allowing them to work (and sometimes live) inside the building, in makeshift studios, for very little rent. They were kicked out after a staircase collapsed, almost killing one of their members, and generally put up much less of a fight about it than the graffiti artists. [Runnin' Scared; previously]
